Are You Small Enough?

"What is man that You take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?"
Psalm 8:4

Years ago, there was a famous explorer named William Beebe, a good friend of President Theodore Roosevelt. Often when he visited the President at Sagamore Hill, the two men would go outdoors at night to see who could first locate the Andromeda galaxy. Then, as they gazed at the tiny smudge of distant starlight, one of them would recite, “That is the spiral galaxy of Andromeda. It s as large as our Milky Way. It is one of a hundred million galax- ies. It is 750,000 light years away. It consists of 100 billion suns, each larger than our sun.” Then Roosevelt would grin and say, “Now I think we are small enough! Let’s go to bed.” With this ritual, Beebe and Roosevelt restored their sense of wonder. David had that sense of wonder, too. As he looked at creation he marveled that such a magnificent God could love and care for frail, weak humans. So often we think we have all the answers and can do everything needed without God's help. But the truth is we are completely dependent upon Him. Without His grace we would have nothing. Go out today and renew your wonder of God. Then lift up praises to Him for all that He is.

A Time for Everything

"There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens"
Ecclesiastes 3:1

This morning I watched this pregnant elk grazing in our yard. In a few weeks she will drop her calf and begin the task of mothering. It is a special time of the year for all of us who live around these magnificent creatures. And it reminds me that there is "a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens". This is as true for the animals as it is for humans. It's all part of God's wonderful plan. I'm thankful that the Lord brought this to my mind today. His beautiful creation is a constant testimony to His faithfulness and the truth of His word. There is a time for everything.

Our Great God

"For who in the skies is comparable to the LORD?
Who among the sons of the mighty is like the LORD,"
Psalm 89:6

God has painted breathtaking sunrises this week in the Rockies. I appreciate the beauty that fills the morning skies, but it is short lived. Within seconds the heavens' purple, crimson and golden hues fade away as the sun ascends into view. We live in a land of ever changing skies, but the One who created them never changes. Dawn may arrive tomorrow in a blanket of gray, but our God will still be on His throne, dressed in brilliant light. His brilliance is singular -- there is none other like it, neither in Heaven nor on earth -- and it will never diminish. It is eternal because He is eternal.

O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

"How Great Thou Art"
Originally a Swedish folk melody,
"O Store Gud" by Carl Boberg (1859-1940)
was translated by Stuart K. Hine in 1899.

Struck by the Glory of God

"Come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker."
Psalm 95:6

God has created us with eyes to behold the majestic beauty of His creation; ears to hear the peaceful sound of a rippling stream or early morning birdsong; a nose to sniff the scent of pine or fragrance of a blooming rose; hands to touch smooth stones or make a snowball; and feet to walk through fertile pastures or lovely parks. All this we may take for granted, until suddenly we're struck by the glory of God. In an attitude of humility before our awesome God, we worship Him. Hallelujah to the LORD our Maker!

Don't Settle for Less

"The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands;"
Acts 17:24

The awesome Creator of the earth and all it possesses, the Ruler of the Universe, cannot be housed in a structure, nor imprisoned in creation itself. God is not in all things, and to say that He is belittles and impersonalizes Him. God is unique. There is no one like Him. He loves us and wants us to know Him as He really is. Why should we settle for empty, man-made gods when we can have a vital relationship with God Almighty Himself?

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

"For You formed my inward parts;
         You wove me in my mother's womb.
    I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
         Wonderful are Your works,
         And my soul knows it very well."
Psalm 139:13-14

I am "fearfully and wonderfully made" and so are you. No matter who you are or what you look like. No matter if you came from a wealthy family or a family steeped in poverty. Whether you are highly educated, or illiterate. You are one of God's magnificent creations and that gives you value. You are beautiful in God's eyes and He delights in you. Give thanks to God. For you are "fearfully and wonderfully made".
